FAQs:

1. Why is there “2015” in “WHMIS 2015”?

Do not get alarmed when you see “2015” on your training certificate, as this is only the name of the course and not the year of when you received training.

GHS (Globally Harmonized System) was adopted by Canada in 2015. This change meant that WHMIS training will change. In order to distinguish between “old” and “new” WHMIS, we started calling new WHMIS the “WHMIS 2015”, and the old one “WHMIS 1988”.

2. When does my WHMIS training expire?

It is a recommended and standard practice for WHMIS training to be renewed annually. Your certificate will note the annual renewal recommendation.

3. Where can I find more information on the hazards of chemicals I might be exposed to?

In addition to information found on labels of products, more detailed information can be found in Safety Data Sheet. Safety Data Sheets must be prepared by Supplier or Distributor and made available to your by your employer. If you are unsure where to find Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s), ask your supervisor or your employer.

4. Is online WHMIS course accepted/allowed?

Online courses are convenient way to study at your own pace in comfort of your own home. As long as the course is of good quality, and is following e-learning principles, you should be able to gain general knowledge of WHMIS through an online course.

In person training might still be a better option for some because instructor is there to answer all your questions and concerns. You also get to learn from others in class, through sharing of knowledge and unique experiences. If you prefer in-person training, contact us for class schedule.

Please note that generic WHMIS course is meant to provide generic knowledge on WHMIS systems and responsibilities. As a result, employers will still be obligated to train workers on specific hazards related to the specific products that are used at their workplace.

5. Who signs my certificate?

Your immediate supervisor should sign your certificate(s). If you are self-employed, please provide your own signature under “Employer Signature”.
